Greenwich Village is largely a landmarked district. The homes of artists, writers, actors, public personalities and several scandalous events are here for the discovery. In Russell Shorto's recently published book, The Island at the Center of the World, we learned that a Dutch settler from the Long Island Village of Greenwyck (Pine District) circa 1650, would relocate to Manhattan and give his property that name (it would seem to be from this not from English sources that Greenwich Village would receive its name). |
